School Council meeting - Road Safety

The school council thought the Be Safe! Be Bright! Be Seen! day was a great success! Also the after school sale encouraged many families to buy lights or reflective gear to help keep them safe in the darker evenings.

Martin Burrows, our regular visitor from SUSTRANS, came to see us. He asked us about road safety around school. This is what we said:
  • outside the British legion was very busy
  • Humber lane was very busy
  • the nearer it is to school start and finish times the busier it is
We thought about how we could be safe outside school on drop-off and pick-up times: We had these ideas:
  • Have another lollypop man by the other crossing out side school.
  • Have speed bumps on Rydon Road
  • Lower the speed limits on the roads
  • Have flashing lights to warn cars of children crossing.
  • Wear reflective gear
  • Have Stop! Look Listen posters
  • Learn more about the Green Cross Code
  • Reward children who come to school safely
  • Video children school drop-off and pick-up times
Martin Burrows agreed to visit different year groups to talk about Road Safety and journey planning:
  • Y1&2 hopefully before Christmas
  • Y3/4 in the summer term
  • Y6  in the summer term
  • Y5 will carry on with bikeability training
Martin Burrow said he would also like to help classes with any health and environment, ideas. Any teachers should contact the school council if they would like Martin to visit them in class. In the meantime, he was going to investigate the possibility of the safety measures we talked about. We thanked him for sharing his time with us.
