Minutes: AGENDA - Mrs Lofty opened the meeting and explained the purpose for it as being the fact that the School Library and the corridor reading scheme books are not being put away properly and consequently, pupils are having problems finding their books.  It was mentioned that any helpers (librarians?) would have to be supervised in some manner if used in the break times /lunchtimes. Any ideas would have to be part of a regular routine to keep on top of it.

Ideas from the School Council members are as follows:

·         To pick 2 names from a hat (for each year group) to be librarians for the week/day.

·         To have a book collection point in the Library where pupils drop their books once read. Then the librarians would put them away at a later time. This would also include corridor books as well!

·         Pupils to ‘record’ the box number in their reading record so they know where to put them back.  Mrs Lofty explained that they would have the book in their hand so they can see the box number.

·         Every day, 1 adult to be with some Year 6 pupils to supervise during registration.

·         To do AR in the Library –mentioned there are also other intervention groups usually working in the Library and that this would not work due to numbers of children and timetabling.

·         Library monitors- librarians- (perhaps responsible Year 6 children).

·         Once the pupils have changed their books in the Library they could stay and tidy up.

·         To have signs in the Library- books for younger children / books for older children.

·         KS1/KS2 to look after their areas in the corridor and Library. Pupils nominated in register order-could overlap?

·         A reward system- either for year group or individual classes – e.g. for the tidiest boxes.

·         Pupils go in pairs to make sure each other puts their books away in the correct places.

·         Yr 6 pupils to go with the other Year group children to make sure that they put their books away in the correct places.

·         Books to be sorted into Non-fiction and Fiction –Mrs Lofty explained that the Library is sorted in this manor but the Reading Scheme would not be able to be sorted this way as the reading scheme is in a set order.

·         Have a Book club –meet regularly and can sort boxes and the Library.

·         The ‘After School Club’ has already offered to sort the boxes and re-do the book numbers in the club time as a special job- this would however need to be on a regular basis.

·         For staff to ‘remind’ children on a regular basis to put the books away in the correct places.

·         Year 6 pupils to be trained and then supervise the rest of the school changing their books.

·         To have a 79A/79 B and 80A/80B box as a lot of Yr3 and Yr4 children are crowded round the 2 boxes for their next book. There is currently only 1 book per title. They are usually then left on the side and not put back. Can we buy some more?

 Action
